We are all dependent on sunshine for life and health. This is the main source of Vitamin D. Vitamin D receptors are everywhere in the body. Vitamin D deficiency is so massively widespread that about 1 billion worldwide are deficient.

When we stay indoors for extended periods of time by choice or otherwise the lack of exposure to the sun can drastically reduce our Vitamin D levels which have been shown to correlate with depression. Vitamin D has been proven to exist in the brain and it stimulates the production of serotonin. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter that influences mood, sleep, and many other brain and biological functions. Low serotonin levels can contribute to depression. In the winter a lack of exposure to the sun can be accompanied by the so-called “winter blues”.

Research supports the idea that serotonin plays a significant role, not only in the treatment of depression but also in our susceptibility to depression.
